Ohmni, the 3D printed family robot

We all have a relative in a corner of the world. The “planetary village” in which we live, requires us to stay connected in different ways to those who care about. Among the technological innovations that have this purpose, the robotics start-up OhmniLabs designed a telepresence robot, Ohmni, using 3D printing. Ohmni allows families to stay in touch with their loved ones and to take part in the activities they organized.

Based in California, the OhmniLabs team makes use of their experience in artificial intelligence, machine learning, multi-agent systems, mechanical and electrical engineering and rethink telepresence. They manufactured Ohmni by specifically targeting the family environment.

In terms of features and design, it could be much more interesting to use than existing chat solutions such as Skype, or Google Hangouts.

Thuc Vu, co-founder and CEO of OhmniLabs, shares his experience with Ohmni: “We created a robot that people can use everyday not only to communicate but experience life together. The possibilities are endless. I use Ohmni with my grandma in Vietnam and it’s amazing how natural our interaction is.”

Ohmni, its features

This robot was created from 3D printed parts. Simplicity best characterizes the robot because even a basic level of technical knowledge could use it. The robot is in reality remotely controlled from a docking station.

Delivered already assembled, one just needs to connect it to a WIFI like any device. Like a computer, it can be controlled from a mouse or a touchpad. Its cloud technology can integrate into a Google or Facebook account to identify each user.

In terms of aesthetics, the design combines aluminium and bamboo to ease its integration into the decor of each home.

In order to increase Ohmni’s production, the start-up Tech calls for contributors on the Indiegogo platform. The crowdfunding campaign is open until May 10th and the first donors will receive their 3D robot four months after the end of the campaign.
