Lithoz and Glassomer develop a 3D printable quartz glass for high-performance applications

Ceramic 3D printing company Lithoz has been working with Glassomer on the development of a 3D printable quartz glass material. Glassomer is a company that first appeared on our radar in 2019 after they participated in the Formnext start-up challenge. They opened our eyes on the possibility to 3D print glass – and since then, they have been developing an expertise in the fabrication of high purity fused silica glass parts.

“Our transparent high-purity glass solutions offer enormous potential for many applications, especially for high-stability optical and technical parts”,  Dr. Frederik Kotz-Helmer, CSO of Glassomer outlines.

As part of this partnership with Lithoz, they develop a new material called “LithaGlass powered by Glassomer”. Qualified for Lithoz’ flagship technology, the Lithography-based Ceramic Manufacturing technology, the material can enable high level of precision and complexity.

A new addition to Lithoz’ portfolio of slurries

Once combined with ceramic 3D printing, the desirable properties of the “LithaGlass powered by Glassomer” material include high-performance fused silica glass – such as mechanical stability and high thermal and chemical resistance, as well as low thermal expansion and a resulting high thermal shock resistance.

With LithaGlass being closer to a ceramic than standard glasses like soda lime glass, it also has the desirable material properties of fused silica glass including a low thermal expansion and high thermal shock resistance, Lithoz explains.

Needless to say this achievement is a win-win for both companies as it opens up new opportunities for the fields of ceramics, glass and 3D printing. We couldn’t agree more with Lithoz’ CEO Dr. Johannes Homa as he states:

“Glassomer’s choice of Lithoz’s LCM process as their key technology to achieve this innovation once again proves the sheer potential and flexibility of our system. The new LithaGlass material brings our company one step closer to our vision – finding solutions to every challenge of today with a 3D-printed ceramic answer.”

The announcement follows a recent partnership signed between Lithoz and Italian start-up ZENIT Smart Polycrystals.
