Could WASP make us believe in “3D Printing for sustainable living”?

After the successful construction of Gaia, the architectural model that was 3D printed using raw earth as material and the Crane Wasp as technology, the Italian manufacturer unveils its plan for the construction market for 2020.

Called “3D Printing for Sustainable Living”, this plan consists in a long-term program dedicated to the development of construction processes through 3D printing and digital fabrication, towards a new concept of house building.

In order to achieve this, the company will collaborate with various partners that range from architectural design to the university research, as well as humanitarian associations and national ministries.

The company wants to design for on-site 3D printing and to use local raw materials. Such type of construction is often difficult to achieve because it requires the technology to be able to withstand any temperature. Furthermore, if the construction site changes, professionals will have to adapt and devlop new ways of consruction using materials of another environment. The mission will therefore not be the easiest one.

3D Printing for Sustainable Living” would be push forward thanks to a certain number of advantages and tools: promotion of human and material resources from the territory, sustainability of construction process with low environmental impact, recycling materials, digitalization of construction site, multi-purposes construction and digital design.

From what experts say, it still difficult to consider construction 3D printing as the only method for sustainable living, especially because of the expensive costs it requires. However, today, only one motto drives the company: “everyone in the world will have a fine, healthy, sustainable, self-sufficient and ecological home for birthright. The earth is our witness, took form in Gaia.
