Beluga, a 3D-printed sailing boat prototype fabricated using recycled PP and 30% short glass fiber.

As events are going back on track on, several showcased projects between public and private companies enable to appreciate the capabilities of new comers in the industry. One of these projects is Beluga, the product of a joint research project between Caracol and energy company NextChem that produces MyReplast recycled plastic materials. Beluga was then unveiled as part of Milan Design Week, the unofficial name for the world’s biggest annual design gathering.

Both companies are based in Italy ad Caracol brings here its expertise in robotic AM. Its manufacturing solution is often at the heart of the production of large-scale objects in composite materials. The proprietary, robotic additive manufacturing system consists in a patented extruder and a six-axis robotic arm, which as per the words of the company, features several benefits over other manufacturing processes, benefits which include production flexibility, weight, and cost reduction.

Beluga is a 3D-printed sailing boat prototype fabricated in a single piece using recycled polypropylene (PP) and 30% short glass fiber. According to the large-scale AM expert, no mould was required for this single piece. Using recycled MyReplast PP reinforced with glass fiber helps for stabilization during the printing process and enables to enhance part rigidity and performance.

Apart from NextChem’s trademark for its upcycling technology – Beyond MyReplast -, other partners have been involved in the project. They include Euroscatola that creates packaging with recycled materials; Yacht Club Santo Stefano, which provided its team of athletes, locations and expertise to test and validate the boat; as well as Elli furniture design company; and Bombeer food and beverage partner for the event.
