Meet GEN3, Zellerfeld’s most advanced 3D printer for shoes

Known as one of the few companies mass producing footwear with additive manufacturing, Zellerfeld recently unveiled another proprietary 3D printer, designed to mass produce footwear.

Named GEN3, the company said it is three times faster than the company’s previous model, fully autonomous and helps deliver multi-color 3D printing.

“Our first generation, MONO1, got us to hundreds of pairs. Then, GEN2 printed tens of thousands. Now, GEN3 will get us to millions of pairs—three times faster, multi-color ready, fully autonomous, and quick to build. Our mission is clear: printed shoes on every foot,” said Cornelius Schmitt, CEO of Zellerfeld.

The launch follows the company’s recent collaboration Fraunhofer IAPT), to design what could become the world’s largest 3D printing shoe factory.

We needed a solid plan for growth,” said Lennard Stoever, Co-Founder and President of Zellerfeld. “Fraunhofer IAPT gave us key insights through hands-on analysis—that foundation is helping us move forward with confidence.”

The company did not reveal much about this 3D printer’s features but it makes sense because AM remains a vehicle to reach their real customers: millions of consumers across the world.

That said, the AM industry recognizes this achievement because scaling is the toughest part of the game. And in Zellerfeld’s case, it consisted in building a machine specifically designed for the shoe application.

With GEN3, Zellerfeld is taking a giant step toward its bold ambition: 3D printing millions of shoes. What makes this leap possible is its decision to open up the platform, inviting designers from all over the world to upload their own 3D footwear concepts. These designs won’t just sit in a gallery; they’ll be manufactured and sold directly through Zellerfeld. The company expects to add more than 1,000 new designs by the end of the year, turning its catalog into something that feels less like a product lineup and more like an app store for shoes.
