Launched in September 2022, 3D bioprinting startup Systemic Bio aimed to create extremely precise vascularized organ models using biomaterials and human cells.
The company was founded and led by Taci Pereira, as a subsidiary of 3D Systems. Pereira’s personal story motivated her mission to fight cancer. Unfortunately, willingness alone was not sufficient to help the company thrive.
Pereira, who announced the closure on a blog post, explains that “the problem [they] were solving is massive, requires significant investment, and the industry is undergoing tremendous challenges. 3D Systems is laser-focused on profitability and can no longer hold this cost-intensive bet.”
In her blog post, she emphasized that “none of what [they] built would have been possible without [the] dedication and belief [of the team],” and expressed gratitude to 3D Systems CEO Jeff Graves, founder Chuck Hull, and former EVP Menno Ellis for their support.
“But this isn’t the end. It’s the space between chapters. The mission remains. The vision for better, human-relevant drug development is clearer than ever,” she concludes.
