Royal Caribbean makes use of 3D printing in a collaboration with Snapchat

In a project of cruise line operators, Royal Caribbean takes advantage of 3D printing. Indeed, Royal Caribbean Snapchat Spectacles called SeaSeeker are a creative way to explore the marine life by allowing the wearer to record short video clips with a diving mask.

With the SeaSeeker mask, the wearer can record videos by “[snapping] underwater and [giving] everyone else on the surface an intimate view of life under the sea.”

Snapchat will soon get a patent for the new waterproof mask and will offer it to Royal Caribbean travellers.

Manufacturing of the SeaSeeker mask

Creative agency MullenLowe carried out the prototype of the mask. They 3D printed an adaptor in ABS to enable the Snapchat Spectacles to be fixed within the diving mask. Furthermore, it also protects the wearer from the sea.

For now, trials of the diving mask are being carried out by experts. The latter has already reached a depth of 150 feet.

Christian Madden, SVP, creative technologist at MullenLowe explains that their “design and prototyping process focused on creating a 3D printed adapter that surrounds the Spectacles and mates them to a customized dive mask, creating a water-tight environment for the camera’s electronics. Being able to create rapid prototypes on the 3D printer enabled the team and Royal Caribbean to try a number of different approaches before finding the optimal solution.”

The SeaSeeker will enable all adventure-seekers to get a front-row seat to the thrilling adventures found underwater in a way that has never been possible before,” said Jim Berra, chief marketing officer and SVP of Marketing, Royal Caribbean International. “Snapchat continues to be a favorite channel for curious travellers and is the ideal platform for this first-of-its-kind undersea exploration. We are excited to <…> bring the underwater experience to our guests as they visit the incredible destinations we sail to.”
