After months of preparation, Oerlikon is happy to celebrate the opening of its additive manufacturing production facility. The Huntersville-based USD 55 million Innovation Hub & Advanced Component Production facility is a milestone in its growth strategy in the US.

The company is known as a supplier of surface solutions, equipment, advanced materials and materials processing. Over time, the specialist of surface solutions has known how to fully take advantage of additive manufacturing manufacturing and has dedicated a whole unit to this technology. Today, Oerlikon keeps transforming demanding industries such as aerospace, medical, automotive, power generation and tooling industries by providing a wide range of services: print-tested and qualified metal powders, design for AM expertise, conventional and additive manufacturing services, from prototyping to production, as well as product validation and quality inspection support.

With the opening of this 125 000 square foot facility (11612 square meters), Oerlikon demonstrates the good health of its AM market and its willingness to go even further. The R&D and production facility is the second location of the company in North Carolina; it already employs about 60 people and does not intend to stop there.

“This facility marks an important step in our investment strategy for growth,” said Prof. Dr. Michael Süss, Chairman of the Board of Directors, Oerlikon Group. “Additive manufacturing will play a decisive role in how industries and industrial processes will look in the future. We are committed to investing in this business and leading the industrialization of this technology.”

We are already working with customers in the aerospace, automotive, energy and medical industries in the US, and we anticipate continued growth in those sectors, as well as in others,” said Dr. Sven Hicken, Head of Oerlikon’s Additive Manufacturing business. “We believe that additive manufacturing can transform production in many industries, and we are excited that our presence here in North Carolina allows us to better demonstrate those possibilities to our customers.”

We can’t wait to see the different AM projects that Oerlikon will carry out in its new facility.
