adidas releases $415 3d Printed Sunglasses that weigh only 20 grams

adidas has recently launched another product that required the use of 3D printing within its production.

Since 2017, the sportswear brand has mainly collaborated with Carbon to unveil limited editions of sneakers featuring 3D-printed midsoles. However, this time, the company has worked with  Marcolin Group (whose brand portfolio includes Tom Ford, Guess, Moncler, Timberland, and countless others), to produce these new 3D printed sunglasses.

Not that it often matters to the wearer, but these sunglasses would be the lightest on the market as they weigh only 20 grams – a weight that is due to the hollow structure and lightweight polycarbonate lenses. Named 3D CMPT, the all-new eyewear frame would have required the newest generation of 3D printers which weave a flexible nylon structure. A special coating creates a textured rubberized effect across the spiraling surface.

“From the adidas DNA, characterized by an ongoing search for high-performance lines and materials, comes a frame destined to leave its mark on the evolution of eyewear thanks to the most modern technologies,” describes adidas in a press release. “In sport, and as in everyday life, the dynamic soul of the individual requires attention to detail. That attention and care have been translated into new shapes, weights, and volumes for sunglasses designed for game and playtime,” adidas adds.

Further information has not been disclosed regarding the exact type of technology leveraged as part of this production. However, we do know that the 3D CMPT sunglasses have been produced in a limited quantity of just 150 pairs and will be available exclusively at Adidas.com during Creative Club Week starting August 23rd, 2021. The sunglasses will retail for $415.
