Artificial intelligence is increasingly combined with 3D printing processes to improve manufacturing. 3D Systems has recently decided to follow this road and has chosen Aquant’s Artificial Intelligence (AI) platform to diagnose machine failures in order to improve productivity and uptime of its 3D printers.

Aquant is an AI platform that uses machine learning to learn a company’s unique language and exploit it to maximize equipment uptime. Its algorithms convert historical structured and unstructured data into a meaningful knowledge base, providing predictive and actionable service recommendations.

Using Aquant will enable 3D Systems to quickly diagnose issues based on reported symptoms, immediately escalate complex problems, and better predict parts required for service calls – increasing first-time-fix rates. The 3D printing specialist will therefore exploit the data they’ve gathered over the years to create an immediate improvement in speed and accuracy.

In another context, AI was combined with 3D printing to enable the manufacturing of Hackrod’s sports car chassis.

For now, it’s quite difficult to truly perceive the functioning of such technology. One thing is certain, it is gaining mass adoption on the market.
