Designed to address the challenges of traditional mechanical polishing, Holdson’s Electroform machine provides increased throughput.

The concept of Electrochemical polishing is not often part of our daily conversations in the AM industry. It is said to improve surface finish by reducing surface roughness by up to 50%. The process consists in creating a mirror-like surface on dull metals by selectively removing specific particles from the outer surface of the part.

Moving forward, we will hear more about this process through Holdson, a UK-based electrochemical polishing machine tool supplier, that has developed an Electroform machine. The latter would help operators who are looking to enhance the post-processing stage of 3D printed parts.

Powered by a one-of-a-kind dynamic contour electrode and utilizing machine learning algorithms, Holdson’s flagship product would ensure optimal polishing for additively manufactured components. The patent-protected machine is designed to address the challenges of traditional mechanical polishing while operating up to six times faster than competitor machines – as per the words of the company. It also allows for superior control over material removal rates helping to achieve extremely precise surface finishes.

The company’s commitment to sustainability has meant that the electroform machines have been developed to use recyclable consumables and electrolytes. This closed-loop system eliminates hazardous waste and reduces the risk of exposure to hazardous materials.

Developed with the medical, automotive, and aerospace industries in mind, Holdon’s Electroform series of machines act as a cost-effective and high-quality solution for post-processing metal components that have been additively manufactured.

“We’re thrilled to finally launch Holdson and introduce our patented Electroform series machine to the market,” Neil Dickinson, Chief Technology Officer at Holdson comments.

Holdson’s business

Holdson has been developed by a team of experts with decades of combined experience in materials technology, metallurgy, and precision engineering. The company has formed part of a major InnovateUK collaboration, showcasing the innovative nature of its technology.

Chantelle Brandon Reeves, Senior Innovation & Growth Specialist at Innovate UK EDG said:“Innovate UK EDGE are proud to be supporting Holdson on its growth journey. The innovative business is poised for rapid growth in the coming years. We look forward to seeing what the future holds for this company, and are positive that Holdson’s revolutionary product offer can make a significant impact on the medical, aerospace, automotive, and energy sectors.”

Holdson is now accepting orders for the Electroform series machine, with delivery expected to begin later this year.
