It’s been a few years now that footwear brand adidas has been demonstrating that a solid product can result from the combination of sport and technology. With Carbon as technology partner, the company has continuously improved its limited collections of 3D printed shoes.

With the launch of Adidas Ultra 4D, the footwear brand has deepened its partnership with the US-based manufacturer of Digital Light Synthesis™.

To achieve this level of accuracy and finesse, adidas worked with 4000 individual data to ensure comfort and support on the midsole while the runner needs it most.

With this combination combine data and digital design, both teams have explored colorways, limited editions, and sustainable materials to rebuild the midsole.

Speaking of the new midsole, Creative Director Adidas Running Sam Handy says: “We’re in a constant feedback loop with athletes and consumers to understand how they experience and perform in 4D. From generations one and two to generation three, we completely rebuilt the adidas 4D midsole to make it lighter, improve the cushioning, and deliver a much better experience.”

The Ultra 4D shoes firstly feature complex shapes when we look at them and their midsoles would absorb pressure from all parts of the foot. Like reactive cushioning, this unique lattice structure provides controlled energy return across each stride.

Today, the use of AM in consumer goods products continue to amaze the entire manufacturing industry that will gradually consider the technology as an option in their production. Today, adidas is still leading the way in leveraging this type of manufacturing process, in a few years; this process will become the new standard.
