Fehrmann Alloys launches new high-performance alloy for metal 3D Printing & casting processes

Fehrmann Alloys GmbH & Co KG, a combined venture of Fehrmann GmbH and Cremer, has launched a new high-performance alloy for metal 3D Printing. Named AlMgty, the new metal powder can also be used for casting processes.

The metallic powder would be corrosion-resistant and color anodizable. It would offer excellent elongation at break, tensile strength of 355 Mpa, yield strength of 220 MPa, and elongation of 19% during the 3D Printing process.

Additional research reveals that, while AlMgty does not rely on expensive alloying parts such as scandium, there is also less chance to get supply issues due to low availability or extraction conditions that are hard to control, as with scandium.

AlMgty consists exclusively of conventionally available components; Expensive, scarce elements, such as scandium, which can only be broken down under conditions that are difficult to control, are dispensed with. There is no loss of strength here. Until now, the color gray-brown has dominated in metal 3D printing, because components made of the primarily related standard alloy AlSi10Mg cannot be anodized well due to the silicon content of 9 to 11 percent”, the company told 3D ADEPT.

Engineers in the automotive industry usually do not consider AM as an option when it comes to producing colored anodized metal parts as unique pieces or small series. They now have a viable material that does not need silicon, hence the possibility to anodize 3D Printed parts in different colors.

Despite this first positive description, real applications, in addition to comparison of weight and costs with other materials, could confirm the benefits of this new high-performance alloy for manufacturing processes.
