Facebook, the social network par excellence where people share what they care about with their friends, now lets its users share 3D posts.
3D posts will enable people to see and interact with a digital object from all sides in their news feed. This new upgrade of the immersive media is responsive to scroll and touch, and make content pop off the screen.
3D posts on Facebook: how to make it happen?
The social network is currently developing a new support for the industry-standard glTF 2.0 file format. In other terms, artists and creators will easily share even richer, higher-quality 3D content on Facebook from a range of diversified sources.
“With glTF 2.0 compliance comes support for textures, lighting, and realistic rendering techniques — so from rough to shiny, metallic to soft, beautifully detailed 3D art can now come alive on Facebook. 3D posts also support unlit workflows for photogrammetry and stylized art”, Facebook explains.
Companies which already enable to share that way
If Facebook lets its users now share their 3D models via its own file format; notice is to be made that some partners of the giant had already precede it on this new way of interacting with people.
Xperia already enables its users to share 3D content on Facebook via Sony’s 3D creator app. On internet, web users can share directly from the Oculus Medium web gallery and very soon, they will be able to do the same from Google Poly.
This feature might only be the beginning for the giant Facebook. The next step will certainly allow users to share their experiences across AR, VR, mobile and web. It’s a matter of time before people’s favorite game, movie characters or even museum artifacts can be transformed into interactive scenes.
