Interest groups focused on additive manufacturing are nothing new. Most, however, share a familiar set of limitations: they tend to be industry-driven, nationally anchored, and rarely built to bridge the gap between technology development and strategic security needs.
AMDefNet is positioning itself differently.
The newly established European Additive Manufacturing Defence Network has a clear ambition: to consolidate additive manufacturing at European level, develop shared principles for its deployment, and make those capabilities accessible to both military forces and emergency services across the continent.
At its core, the association aims to build and strengthen the foundations for a European strategy on additive manufacturing in the context of defense and security.
“We must ensure that we work together more effectively in Europe,” the network stated on its website. “There are many good approaches to making 3D printing available to the armed forces. Unfortunately, this usually only happens at national level and not jointly. As AM enthusiasts, we see it as our task to overcome these barriers and strengthen cooperation.”
The network’s approach is deliberately cross-sector. By connecting stakeholders from industry, research institutions, government agencies, and security and emergency response organisations, AMDefNet wants to support a more coordinated, technology-driven approach to European security preparedness.
Among the companies reported to be backing the initiative are One Click Metal, Stratasys, Mark3D –Markforged, DMG MORI, Materialise, Prusa Research, and Mesago Messe Frankfurt.
The real question, of course, is what comes next. With founding members in place and a mandate defined, what will AMDefNet’s first concrete deliverable be? Frameworks? Pilot programmes? Policy recommendations?
That answer will determine whether this network becomes a meaningful lever for European defence readiness or another well-intentioned initiative that stops at the declaration stage.
