Tokyo-based startup Innovative Space Carrier Inc. (ISC) announced a business alliance with UK-based WAAM3D, a spin-out company from Cranfield University, in connection with Aichi Sangyo Corporation, for manufacturing propellant tanks. This is one major leap in space technology that would answer space vehicle development using 3D printers.
ISC was established in May 2022 and is developing reusable space transportation systems. The firm implements agile development for quicker production, testing, and modification processes. To that end, 3D printing plays a great role in making integrated structures with optimal design and reduced weight and manufacturing time.
Known for its WAAM solutions, WAAM3D will supply hardware and software solutions at the highest level. Research is provided by Cranfield University, which has achieved unrivaled experience in metal AM, while Aichi Sangyo provides industrial application and market intelligence as one of the first companies to adopt metal AM commercially in Japan.
The collaboration helps develop better propellant tanks & opens possibilities for more uses of wire-arc AM in the space field. Merging the capabilities of these global leaders, ISC focuses on creating an example that showcases what WAAM is capable of in space and making agile and fast development real.
This alliance represents a serious step forward toward ISC’s aim of developing a reusable space vehicle while enhancing the contribution of Japan to the world of space.
The CEO of Innovative Space Carrier Inc. Kojiro Hatada says “Our goal is to be Japanese spirit with Western learning. We will humbly learn from our partners, both in Japan and abroad, who possess cutting-edge knowledge, and reflect this knowledge to Japan’s strengths. We will also grow Japan’s space industry by dramatically increasing the development speed and establishing space transportation technology that can compete globally!”
