AREVO is an Additive Manufacturing company known for the development of a continuous carbon fiber technology. Ever since it has launched its Manufacturing-as-a-Service offering, we have mostly seen the company focus on the development of 3D printed bikes and bikes’ components.
As a matter of fact, its biggest commercial application, the Superstrata carbon fiber bike, has led to a company of the same name, also led by AREVO current CEO, Sonny Vu. Vu is also at the head of Mishima, a Scandinavian-inspired Japanese furniture brand that uses AREVO’s AM technology and advanced carbon fiber composite materials to create on-demand custom order furniture.
Last week saw the launch of Mishima’s flagship product, a custom-made lounge chair and ottoman supported by a single carbon fiber composite structure. Arevo lives up to its tagline which is “making the world lighter”, by unveiling lightweight yet strong as metal parts for this collection.
The Mishima Lounge Chair and Ottoman have been manufactured using a single pass of continuous carbon fiber thermoplastic composite. Interestingly, the picture reveals that the support structure has been fabricated without joints or glue, just with aerospace-grade ultra-high modulus carbon fiber for high strength to support the chair. In a nutshell, a manufacturing process that passes stringent ANSI/BIFMA durability and safety standards.
“The distinct engineering and materials used for Mishima brings the body into nearly weightless sensation,” describes Sonny Vu, CEO of Mishima. “It’s perfectly angled for comfort and its strong, physics-defying core allows the body to have a feeling of undisturbed floating in mid-air.”
With a range of customizable options for Mishima’s base and shell, customers can choose from a curated selection of luxurious fabrics and supple leathers in a variety of premium shades. Each unit can be, visualized with augmented reality before being purchased online via Mishima’s website.
The first 500 Mishima Lounge Chairs and Ottomans made will make up the Founder’s Series, Mishima states.
