Google Blocks, Google’s new virtual reality 3D modelling application

Google Blocks is a virtual reality 3D modelling software that allows users of Oculus Rift and HTC Vive to freely export their designs in .obj format implying therefore that the designs created by Google Blocks can be 3D printed. Furthermore, they can also be found and shared from an online gallery or transformed into animated GIFS.

It seems users can load designs into the Blocks application. Image via Google.

With this software, Google’s purpose is to develop 3D objects for virtual or augmented reality worlds; the truth being that building 3D objects on a 2D screen is not as simple as it looks.

The use of Blocks

Google Blocks can be used through 6 tools: Shape, Stroke, Paint, Modify, Grab, and Ease. A simple and easy-to-use platform is available for beginners as well as for experienced virtual reality designers.

If a lot of applications do exist such as  Oculus’ Medium or MakeVR for virtual reality design, notice is to be made that all of them are not conducive to 3D printing with scaling. Google Blocks on the other hand, is not available for Google’s own VR headset Daydream.
