According to designer Kalina Gotseva, “approximately 500 billion disposable coffee cups are used worldwide each year. ” To propose an eco-friendly alternative to disposable cups, she imagined a solution that combines convenience with sustainability: a unique collapsible design that transforms it from a full-sized cup into a compact, pocket-friendly form factor. This means that the cup can be folded and its cap serves as a protective case, ensuring convenience any time.
Available in dark blue, light aquamarine, and vibrant orange colors, Reusable is made from durable food-grade silicone. The colors are added during the injection molding process using food-safe coloring.
Reusable features sleek aesthetics paired with an ergonomic grip that ensures material efficiency in the mechanism. “The final concept of the foldable cup emerged as a response to countless iterations, material testing, paper prototyping, and 3D printing,” Gotseva said.
With the fight around climate change, alternatives such as Reusable make me think of other solutions developed by technology companies. Remember the 3D printed, clay-based container developed by GaeaStar? These containers are geoneutral. This means that once used, they can be discarded in the normal trash and they will simply turn to dust.
We don’t know yet if Gotseva is thinking about commercializing the Reusable cup. We do hope more corporations will explore such ideas.
