Scrona AG, a Switzerland-headquartered company developing, an electrohydrodynamic (EHD) inkjet printing process, has developed a 128-nozzle that achieves a three-digit nozzle count in digital EHD technology for the first time.
According to the company, this printhead would transform EHD printing into a mass-production-ready solution.
“The rapid development from 8 to 48 and now to 128 nozzles in such a short time is a testament to the scalability of our MEMS-based EHD Gen-3 platform and execution of our team,” said Dr. Patrick Galliker, CTO and Co-Founder of SCRONA.
For those who do not know, in electrostatic printing, the liquid can flow and react to electric fields, allowing for easy adjustments to accommodate various types of ink. Additionally, since the droplets are expelled from a space unrestricted by nozzle walls, it can manage inks that are over 100 times thicker than those used with traditional printheads.
Last year, the company showcased the capabilities of its technology, by collaborating with Avantama, – an expert in high-tech materials for electronics.
With this  128-nozzle printhead, the company’s technology will help several industries scale their operations. These industries include semiconductor advanced packaging, display manufacturing, and consumer electronics. In semiconductor manufacturing for instance, the printhead would enable die-attach applications, dispensing ultra-small adhesive volumes as well as high-resolution printing of conductive interconnects, vital for advanced AI chiplets and chip manufacturing innovations. In display manufacturing on the other hand, it could ensure precision in applying quantum dots and color filters for next-generation micro-LED and OLED displays, enabling vibrant, energy-efficient screens.
While these applications remain interesting examples to know, we can’t wait for Scrona to share use cases that demonstrate the capabilities of this new printhead.
