Meta Reality Labs Research is debuting the Digital Twin catalog, a dataset for 3D object models, for 3D reconstruction. This collection encompasses over 2,400 highly detailed 3D objects that set a standard of sub-millimeter accuracy and unmatched photorealism, representing objects such as toys, kitchen utensils & more.

Making 3D reconstruction robust and efficient is the most vital step of computer vision community can take towards democratizing digital twin creation according to Meta. With the application of neural networks and deep learning, the team at Meta has developed a technique to create an implicit representation of the object rendered at the time of viewing and re-rendered with each change of view angle.

Meta’s push will alter the balance of the digital economy by making it easier for businesses to access 3D model creation. Meta made progress in enhancing dense reconstruction techniques with Neural Radiance Fields (NeRF) & Gaussian splatting

Simultaneously, they explore sparse-view 3D reconstruction models to enable object digitization from casual projections via future smart glasses close to our research glasses prototype called Project Aria.

More notably, Meta is partnering with Shopify, in which both will conduct an academic competition that upgrades AI-powered 3D reconstruction. This partnership can create 7,000 Digital Twin models to push the development of new algorithms.

A 3D support product lead from Shopify – Matt Koenig describes, “This partnership with Meta is a natural extension of our commitment to innovation. By teaming up, we aim to make high-quality 3D digital assets more accessible and easier to create for entrepreneurs. This initiative is one of many collaborations designed to enhance the capabilities of our platform and empower our merchants to engage their customers.”

The ultimate goal is democratizing the availability of high-quality 3D digital assets & integration with major e-commerce platforms, gaming, and virtual reality markets becomes easier.

“In an industry where experiencing products in person can be prohibitive, this collaboration allows us to bridge the gap with cutting-edge tech, bringing our physical pieces into the digital realm. We believe 3D technology has a valuable place in the future of the home furnishings industry, which is why we’re excited to partner with Meta,” reveals Steve Bauer, the senior VP of e-commerce & digital at Arhaus.
