Machine manufacturer Makino announces the launch of an AM Service Bureau and a new metal 3D printer.

Named AML900 machine, the metal 3D printer is based on Laser Metal Deposition, an AM process in which a feedstock material (typically a powder) is melted with a laser and then deposited onto a substrate.

The new machine is an upgrade from the company’s flagship product – the AML500 3D printer. The 5-axis machine features an inert chamber that can process reactive materials such as Titanium and Aluminium.  Designed to meet the demand for large-scale production, the AML900 comes with an enhanced process monitoring systems and automated in-process calibration.

Other key features include:

Build chamber 900x700x700mm
B-Axis ±120°
C-Axis 360°
Rapid Traverse 100rpm(B axis)| 440rpm (C axis)
Maximum payload 200 kg
Laser power Up to 4KW
Laser spot diameter 1~3.2mm
Nozzle type Coaxial
Controller Sinumerik ONE
Powder feeder 2 or more
Powder flowrate 3-60g/min

We have continued to make great progress in our strategic collaboration with Makino Asia over the past year. Both parties have greatly benefited from close cooperation, advancing machine options and developments to expand the application fields for the LMD process,” said Christoph Hauck, toolcraft AG’s Executive Board Member. “We have successfully implemented various applications on the AML500 and are looking forward to further evaluating parameter monitoring to streamline process development in the future.”

The launch of a service bureau along with this 3D printer aims to bridge the gap between the recognition of AM’s potential and the lack of confidence or expertise to operate an AM production line. Given its long-standing expertise in conventional manufacturing, the company is well positioned to explain the differences between those two types of processes, and the areas where AM could deliver exceptional value.
