I will call it a trend: the increasing use of 3D printing within fashion houses and sometimes by celebrities involved in the fashion industry and usually for the fabrication of sneakers or shoes. After Louis Vuitton, and Kanye West, Gucci is the latest fashion house to introduce sneakers with 3D printed elements.
The sneakers are named Gucci Cub3D and combine 3D printed elements and the House’s Demetra material. The sneakers’ distinctive sole, created using the Selective Laser Sintering (SLS) technique, feature a lattice structure inspired by the polyhedron.
The Gucci Cub3d’s upper is crafted mainly of Demetra, the House’s material that combines quality, softness, and durability. Customized for the new sneaker, the material is from 70% plant-based raw materials that are primarily from renewable and bio-based sources, while ensuring peak performance. Additional materials used for the upper contain 100% recycled polyester, and internal materials contain 88% recycled polyester and leather made through a metal-free or chrome-free tanning process.
Footwear 3D designer Mattei Burzio recently shared on LinkedIn that “the Gucci Cub3d Net pattern, developed in Rhino and Grasshopper and then applied to the volumes of the sneaker midsole and in a more fun and distorted way on the slip-ons.”
The highly collectible sneaker, which will be produced in a limited edition of 20 pairs, is presented in dedicated packaging and will be unveiled at the Gucci Via Monte Napoleone flagship boutique from April 16-21.
