Australia-based Aurora Labs Limited (A3D) has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Innovaero Pty LTD, a maker of unmanned aerial systems (UAS) for defense.
As part of this deal, Aurora Labs’ 3D printing technology and Innovaero’s airplane development knowledge will be used to improve the production of metal UAS components. Aurora Labs will provide tiny gas engines for tests on UAS systems.
Originally a joint company between Aerovation Technologies Pty Ltd and BAE Systems Australia Pty Lt, Innovaero is well-known for its creative OWL loitering weapons, Nearmap Ltd, and Spookfish Ltd camera system development.
Originally made for two years and automatically continuing until stopped, the MoU shows a planned attempt to study the possibilities of 3D printing in building complex aircraft components. Together, both teams will explore how to optimize Aurora’s metal 3D printing process to improve the performance and safety of UAS components. For that, the firms will swap data from printing and aircraft technology.
Aurora Labs CEO Rebekah Letheby shared joy about the MoU, stressing its ability to speed the development of UAS components and power systems. Technology gains and efficiency rises expected from this relationship will help businesses and the greater airplane industry. Mike von Bertouch, Co-Managing Director of Innovaero, stressed the chance this union offers to study micro-turbine power systems in real use.
This union stresses the changing possibilities of 3D printing in military and aircraft, with added benefits in design freedom, material efficiency, and output speed. Aurora Labs’ ability to build complicated micro gas turbine components could help Innovaero design the latest power systems by improving the performance of UAS platforms.
