ASTM International committee F42 and ISO TC261 has published a new standard that provides requirements and test methods for the qualification and re-qualification of laser beam machines for metal powder bed fusion additive manufacturing for aerospace applications.

According to peers, the document “can also be used to verify machine features during periodic inspections or following maintenance and repair activities.”

Named ISO/ASTM 52941, the standard takes into account Additive Manufacturing – System performance and reliability – Acceptance tests for laser metal powder-bed fusion machines for metallic materials for aerospace application.

Aerospace AM applications which can be improved and qualified using this standard include civil, commercial, and military aircraft, as well as space propulsion, payload, and manned space flight.

As a reminder, the standard is the result of a collaboration between leading standard organizations ASTM and ISO. In September 2011, both companies have signed a cooperative agreement to govern the ongoing collaborative efforts between the two organisations to adopt and jointly develop International Standards. The purpose of this agreement is to eliminate duplication of effort while maximizing resource allocation within the additive manufacturing industry. The technical committee F42 and ISO TC261 created by both organizations focused specifically on developing additive manufacturing standards.

ACTIVE standards under the jurisdiction of F42.07 include:

  • ISO/ASTM52942-20 Additive manufacturing — Qualification principles — Qualifying machine operators of laser metal powder bed fusion machines and equipment used in aerospace applications
  • ISO/ASTM52941-20 Additive manufacturing — System performance and reliability — Acceptance tests for laser metal powder-bed fusion machines for metallic materials for aerospace application

All standards developed by F42 are published in the Annual Book of ASTM Standards, Volume 10.04 .
