Harvard’s Brigham and Women’s Hospital researchers, in collaboration with Massachusetts General Hospital, are turning your smartphone into an all-in-one sperm test kit thanks to 3D printing techniques.
How and why it has been created…
After connecting the device to the phone, the user must download the application. The test “quickly and accurately evaluates semen samples for fertility testing.” Simply think at how you insert your USB device into your computer.Â
According to researchers and manufacturers, results will be just as accurate as those disclosed by a hospital.
Couples who are trying to have a baby will be the most delightful.
The truth is that in order to determine if the vasectomy normally proceeds, sperm tests are a crucial step in this procedure.
However, because of social stigmas related to sexuality, disadvantages and the discomfort when it comes to going to the doctor, people avoid as much as possible to take the path to a health centre.
Furthermore, some countries just get limited resources or limited access to care, which is an obstacle to the successful clinical trials.
They tested it…
Researchers of both institutes tested the product on more than 300 samples and “detected abnormal sperm samples with an accuracy of 98%”.
“The majority of this test device’ pieces are produced using 3D printing techniques, which made it possible to quickly build such a complex technology at lower cost.”

The price…
Hadi Shafiee, who led the work at Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston, US, affirms: “we wanted to come up with a solution to make male infertility testing as simple and affordable as home pregnancy tests.”
The initial prototype including spare parts from DVD and CD players would cost $ 4.45, and the final price is not so far from that one.
