Wohlers Report 2019: materials suppliers’ activity, first indicator of the market’s growth

Wohlers Associates, Inc., a consulting firm that offers a window into the AM and 3D Printing market has announced the release of its 2019 annual report. For this 24th report, Wohlers has gathered expertise of 80 authors and contributors located in 32 countries as well as contributions from 127 service providers, 71 manufacturers of industrial systems, and 30 producers of desktop 3D printers and third-party materials around the world.

Unlike last year where the metal AM market was the first indicator of the market’s growth, the 369-page Wohlers Report 2019 highlights a record growth of the materials segment. This growth is the result of the activity between materials suppliers and customers and the increasing use of AM by the latter group for production applications.

Airbus, Boeing, Honeywell Aerospace, and United Technologies Corp. are part of the companies that share insights into their AM-related activities, along with BMW, Deutsche Bahn, FIT, Jabil, Oerlikon, UPS, the U.S. Marine Corps.

As far as growth and sales are concerned, “Wohlers Associates tracked growth and sales of 177 producers of industrial AM systems, which are those priced at $5,000 or more. This is nearly one third more than the 135 system manufacturers reported a year ago. While industrial system manufacturers grew notably, desktop 3D printing systems (those that sell for under $5,000) saw significant decline in annual growth. The overall AM market continues to trend upward, with many new players, hundreds of millions of dollars invested, and innovative new products designed for AM that few envisioned years ago.”

This year again, Wohlers seems to have unveiled an unprecedented analysis of the market.  This report is certainly one of the rare ones capable to gather the whole industry and makes it look like a small village.
