Velo3D and Praxair to develop metal AM powders for the aerospace industry

The qualification of powders enables their use for a specific technology within given sectors of the industry. Velo3D, the manufacturer of the Sapphire system, has found in Praxair Surface Technologies, the ideal partner to qualify metal powders for its metal 3D printing system.

As a reminder, the Sapphire system is a laser powder bed metal 3D printing system intended for high volume manufacturing. This solution is offered the market alongside with Flow™ print preparation software, as well as Intelligent Fusion™ technology.

As for Praxair Surface Technologies, it is a subsidiary of Praxair, Inc. that provides the market with a range of high-performance coatings, materials, and technologies dedicated to the aviation, energy and other industries.

Both partners will work on process parameters for new alloys with Praxair’s TruFormTM powders.

As far as Praxair and Velo3D is concerned, it seems that both companies already know their respective expertise. Indeed, two of Praxair’s TruForm powders — 718 and 64 – can already be used with Velo3D’s Sapphire™.

Furthermore, both partners will designate PST as an approved supplier of powder for released parameter sets for Velo3D’s additive manufacturing (AM) solutions.

Regarding their qualification as supplier of powders that results from this partnership, Andy Shives, business manager for additive manufacturing at PST explains that they “have a focus on advancing powder and atomization technology, and this goes hand-in-hand with Velo3D’s focus on advancing the laser powder bed process.”

Moreover, the qualification of powder from main powder suppliers implies that Velo3D’s customers can purchase powder directly from the supplier that has demonstrated its powders work in the Velo3D Sapphire metal additive system. –
