Through this acquisition, both companies aim to advance their research and development in laser systems

On the heels of the minority share acquired last year, Sodick completes the acquisition of Prima Additive.

Sodick, based in Japan, is a global leader in high-precision machine tools, metal 3D printing, and hybrid manufacturing solutions. The company launched its metal 3D printing business in 2014 with a key focus on the mold sector. The company saw an opportunity to enhance molding performance through the incorporation of 3D cooling channels in plastic molds and die-casting molds.

With Prima Additive that mainly focuses on the European market, the company will expand its reach across vertical industries adopting AM.

To date, Prima Additive’s portfolio include laser powder bed fusion, directed energy deposition using metal powder, and directed energy deposition using metal wire, as well as systems equipped with other advanced laser technologies in material processing.

Sodick and Prima Additive have strong synergies across industrial sectors, product portfolios, and sales regions. Given that the metal 3D printing industry is projected to grow at a high CAGR of 24% over the next decade.

Prima Additive is actively engaged in forward-looking R&D, undertaking several EU and Italian key research and innovation projects in the field of advanced manufacturing systems, automation and digital transformation. Following the completion of the transaction, Prima Additive’s headquarters will remain in Italy and its management team, including its chief executive officer Paolo Calefati, will remain unchanged and will play a pivotal role in Sodick’s strategy of growth in the field of advanced laser technologies.
