Beyond the choice of 3D printing, Odette Lunettes’ latest collection is the reflection of where the Belgian eyewear brand wants to go. Like most companies, fashion brands are trying to play their part in the environmental crisis that currently moves across industries.
This can be seen in the choice of Polyamide 11 (PA11) for the development of this collection. The material is commercialized under the name Ultrasint® PA11. Produced by materials producer Forward AM, the bio-based material is responsibly sourced from castor beans, based on Arkema Rilsan® Polyamide 11.
Arkema develops advanced polyamide 11 materials, derived from consciously sourced plants without causing deforestation. A press communication explains that together with Jayant Agro-Organics and Solidaridad, both Arkema and BASF are at the heart of the Pragati Initiative for sustainable castor bean farming in India, which has trained several thousand farmers on good agricultural and socio-economic practices.
From a manufacturing standpoint, the fabrication based on a subtractive process reveals that around 70% of the acetate used in the frames of the glasses can end up being disposed of, while with AM these frames are ‘built to spec’ with no material loss.
Thanks to Materialise’ 3D printing expertise, the manufacturing process used has reproduced a design inspired by the sporting background of former cycling world champion Tom Boonen. Without compromising on style, the collection offers a unisex frame available in two sizes and three colours.
“On top of that you can personalise the design. With our ‘Odette Lunettes X Tom Boonen’ collection, consumers can choose the colour and the size of their frame”, says Eline De Munck, Co-founder of Odette Lunettes.
