Walkolution, a Germany-based company that aims to change how people work by integrating movement into their routine, has taken the treadmill experience to new heights, by launching a 3D-printed treadmill surface.

Named TheraFloor, and described as the world’s first, this treadmill surface integrates a patent-pending technology that enhances walking ergonomics. Walkolution believes that we walk best barefoot to give the user a natural ground feel.

The company has developed two treadmill surface types: TheraFloor Standard, featuring a flatter surface with shock-absorbing lattices of adjustable hardness levels; and TrueTerrain, designed to replicate the dynamic, uneven terrain of outdoor trails with varied heights and densities.

While both surfaces require 3D printing, we know that during the product development phase of the TrueTerrain surface, the team worked with AM services provider OECHSLER which relied on Carbon’s DLS technology to ensure the serial production of 3D printed parts. TrueTerrain helps to make muscles steady, enhancing balance through natural gentle contours provides a realistic feeling to users while walking.

Furthermore, both surfaces integrate two main options: TheraZones® and TheraDots®. TheraZones® mimics natural, uneven terrain by offering varied cushioning across each slat, from firm to soft.

This creates a shifting surface that engages stabilizing muscles, improves proprioception, and helps prevent repetitive strain and overuse injuries. TheraDots® also claims to improve cognitive functions and mental alertness through foot stimulation.

Indeed, the brain relies on sensory input from the feet to maintain balance, coordination, and spatial awareness. TheraFloor surfaces withstand abrasion testing using EPU 46 materials ensuring that barefoot walking is safe and comfortable.

As the company says, TheraFloor products are fully biocompatible, having passed rigorous independent tests for skin sensitization, irritation, and cytotoxicity, as outlined in ISO 10993 standards.
