Illinois: Girls mentor girls in STEAM Technology and 3D printing

STEAM Education increasingly raises the interest of girls of all ages from around the world. The truth is that a great number of students find it quite intimidating to carry out some STEAM (science, technology, engineering, art, mathematics) oriented studies and jobs.

A group of girls from Glenbrook South High School in Glenview, decided to rise to the challenge of teaching their younger counterparts, from fifth to eighth grades, how much fun STEAM can be, through a mentorship program called Got STEAM. Even though the program is geared towards girls, boys can also participate as well.

Kate Stack, a program leader in the mentorship program received $350 for materials thanks to her application for a grant from the Karma for Cara Foundation.

Wokshops started at the beginning of the academic year and the girls chose topics in which “there is a greater deficiency of girls,” said Savera Zulfiqar, a Glenbrook South senior and program leader.

“By having this program, we give girls mentors who are only a few years older than them and they get to see all the awesome projects we are doing,” Stack said. “We’re hoping to inspire them to follow in our footsteps and do their own work too.”

3D printing aroused young girls’ interest in the workshops

Elise Bauerschmidt, an eighth grader at Springman Middle School, used her free time at school to continue learning more about 3D printing technology in particular. Until now, she enjoys every lesson with the group and appreciates the way they teach.

The young girl’s mother thinks it’s fantastic because the girls are so similar in age but they’re doing such amazing projects.

Students may already subscribe for the next workshop (math) on February 1, 2018 at the Glenview Public Library. In March, another one will be carried out on instant engineering challenges, and for April—robotics.
