Headmade Materials, the developer of the Cold Metal Fusion 3D printing, is expanding its portfolio of materials with the new M2 tool steel material and unveils first lead application in the machining tool industry.
As a reminder, the Cold Metal Fusion technology is a sinter-based 3D printing technology that can print metal parts. Designed for serial production, this solution combines the worlds of SLS with the standard Powder Metallurgical processes for debinding and sintering and can help manufacturers achieve over 100,000 parts/year.
The M2 tool steel is said to exhibit well-balanced toughness, wear resistance and hardness properties. With a part density of up to 99%, the material untaps superior mechanical performance required for pre-series and series production.
Headmade Materials also explains that the M2 tool steel is a hardenable high-speed steel with a tungsten-molybdenum matrix suitable for a broad variety of applications and widely used for cutting tools such as twist drills, taps, milling cutters, saws and knives. Worldwide, the M2 type is by far the most popular high-speed steel having replaced grade T1 in most applications. The reasons for this are the wide heat-treating range as well as the excellent combination of red hardness, toughness and wear resistance which open up a broad field of applications.
The company was running the material in its pre-series program for advanced application development. After successful testing in the wake of a lead project for a cutting tool holder together with ColdMetalFusion Alliance partner MIMplus, the company is now launching the M2 tool steel as a commercially available material. This announcement follows Headmade Materials’ integration into the ColdMetalFusion Alliance.
