ExOne Company, a manufacturer of 3D Printing systems has announced its collaboration with Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL), to advance 3D binder jet additive manufacturing. ExOne technology is well known in the industry, especially for the production of 3D printed tooling.
ORNL is the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) open science laboratory. The laboratory comprises a team of experts that specialize in advanced materials, supercomputing, neutrons, and nuclear science.
This agreement between ExOne and ONRL aimed at developing cutting-edge technology for new binder systems with a focus on optimizing chemistry and process parameters for ExOne’s sand and metal systems. The partnership has now been fragmented in different objectives:
ORNL will bring its expertise in instrumentation and advanced data analysis methodologies. Furthermore, the teams plan to optimize binder development for H13 Tool Steel. ORNL’s initiative targeting the production of 500 tools and dies by 2022 for the molding, stamping and forging industries, is expected to establish binder jetting as the leading low-cost method for the fabrication of advanced tooling.
This collaboration between the two players is not a premiere. Amy Elliott, ORNL lead researcher on binder jetting, explained that over the past several years, they’ve worked with ExOne on four binder jetting systems;
It makes no doubt that Industry collaborations such as this help the U.S. remain competitive in manufacturing.
We believe these collaborative efforts will effectively and efficiently result in the establishment of new materials, binders and process developments, retaining our significant edge over competitors and other technologies in the industrial manufacturing space,” said Rick Lucas, ExOne’s Chief Technology Officer.
