Knust-Godwin has selected Continuum’s Powder-as-a-Service to recycle Ni718 internal parts from a large oil and gas company. Continuum Powders, based in Los Gatos, California, USA, is a developer of metal powders (and a portfolio company of Ara Partners, a global private equity firm). In contrast, Knust-Godwin is a precision contract manufacturer headquartered in Katy, Texas, USA.
These Ni718-grade parts must be recycled cost-effectively when they reach end-of-life. Continuum Powders was chosen after several mechanical tests and comparisons with other prominent non-sustainable powder suppliers.
Rob Higby, the CEO of Continuum Powders stated “Continuum is doing things that no other metal powders company can currently do regarding overall lifecycle management of consumable metal parts. We made incredible advancements in converting worn parts into new metal powders, it no longer makes sense to scrap those parts and purchase metal powders made from virgin metals.”
Greyhound M2P (melt-to-powder) platform from Continuum is leveraged to recycle end-of-life bulk parts. Their patented cradle-to-cradle process facilitates alloyed metal waste-stream products recycling into powder in one process. Knust-Godwin then manufactured new parts for their customer using a Renishaw RenAM500Q system.
“Continuum Powders consecutively proved to have the highest quality powders on the market equal to or above all other manufacturers. When you combine that level of quality with the level of sustainability they offer and their Powder as a Service offering making them our de facto go-to provider,” says Michael Corliss, the VP of Knust-Godwin.
This will provide Knust-Godwin with supply chain independence, cost competitiveness, and alloy flexibility with a reduced carbon footprint.
