Construction company Contec Australia is using a concrete 3D printer from machine manufacturer CyBe Construction to 3D print a multi-story building in Western Australia. The company emphasizes the fact that the 3D printer will not replace missing labor but rather assist it.

Contec’s first project with the technology was in Tapping, in Perth’s Northern suburbs in particular: a 3D printed house that led the company to scale up other projects and benefit from the speed of the technology.

As part of their approach, CyBe offers an intensive two-week training program upon printer installation. During this period, CyBe experts trained Contec’s team on everything they need to know to successfully and consistently deliver 3D printed construction projects. Impressively, the training was so effective that Contec’s trainees managed to print all 15 walls for the 155m² home in Tapping within just 10.5 hours of active printing. Just weeks after, Contec assembled the midfloor and printed the walls of the second floor of the building, with a print time of 18 hours.

The importance of the environment

Beyond speed, it’s important to highlight that printing in open air, without the need for a tent, in temperatures of up to 42 degrees, also demonstrated the construction technique’s suitability for Australian conditions.

With plans to expand its fleet of 3D printers by the end of 2025, Contec is already preparing for future projects both in the metro and regional areas of WA. These advancements promise to redefine residential, commercial, and civil construction, setting a new standard for the industry in WA.

In the meantime, the walls of their first two-story 3D-printed house are already complete.
