The ClayXYZ, eponymous start-up just launched a Kickstarter campaign for “the most-user friendly clay 3D printer ever”.
The founder, John Fray, originally a ceramics artist realized the field was quite limited because of the difficulty of the pottery process. That’s why he considers 3D printing technology as a “magical tool” which could bring a more simple approach to ceramic designs.
Let’s be clear, 3D printed clay machines already do exist on the market, however the industrial ones are quite expensive while the desktop machines produced a rendering that is far away from what is expected. Both situations are then resolved by the ClayXYZ, meant to be fun to use and to bring accurate results with high qualities material properties.
By using clay as a material, one big advantage is that the user will always easily find the material. The ClayXYZ accepts all types of basic modelling clay, which can be easily inserted into the extruder.
Furthermore, unlike the PLA filament, the clay can be reused as often as possible if it has not been fired in the kiln. The user just needs to dissolve the 3D printed object in hot water before reusing it. The table below compares The ClayXYZ to two other types of printers:
On Thingiverse and ClayXYZ’s website, a wide range of 3D pottery designs are uploaded so that users could edit parameters according to their needs before the ClayXYZ 3D printer realizes the object. Different shapes can be created and even decorated with paint and other extras before being baked in the kiln to get the final object.
