Operating design changes on life-size 3D CAD models in real time into one’s physical environment

A new 3D product design app for spatial computing

In order to meet the needs of professionals from the games and entertainment industry as well as engineers working on 3D CAD models, Onshape and Magic Leap are currently working on a new 3D product design.

Remember Onshape, the specialist of 3D cloud CAD platform that has recently enabled BFM Material to facilitate collaboration between its customers via its CAD platform.  As for Magic Leap, it is a company that enables the entertainment industry to experience virtual reality.

The new 3D product design

The Magic Leap One Creator Edition, a wearable computer that makes digital content as “real” as possible, will develop the new CAD app.

Furthermore, the spatial computing platform enables engineers that use the “Onshape for Magic Leap” CAD app to bring life-size 3D CAD models into their physical environment and work on design changes anywhere – while collaborating with their colleagues.

The spatial computing universe has the potential to transform every industry,” Magic Leap CEO Rony Abovitz said. “Along with our other development partners, Onshape is helping us discover new applications and markets for Magic Leap One. I look forward to helping them continue to shake up the world of design and manufacturing.

Onshape CEO Jon Hirschtick explained that when he saw Gaby and Tim, two of his collaborators at Onshape, manipulate the model and isolate parts for revisions wearing Magic Leap gear, they looked like crazy people making gestures in the air at an imaginary car.

Imagine your engineering team is reviewing the latest design for a race car. With the Magic Leap One, they will be able to put that car right on the conference table, go under the hood and examine the engine block. They can then levitate the car above their heads and check out the exhaust system,” he says.

This capability to support live 3D editing of CAD models, with design changes updated in real time through the Magic Leap gear is almost like the engineer plays in a sci-fi movie where he is the main character.
