Two Polish scientists, Aleksy Chwedczuk and Jakub Bochiński have recently created a do-it-yourself telescope. The 3D Model is now open source and can be 3D printed by any enthusiast.

The Telescope Prime Project

Harnessing the advantages of design and 3D Printing, it took them 3 months to achieve the telescope model.

The telescope model is composed of three main parts: the main parabolic mirror with a diameter of 20 cm, Raspberry Pi microcomputer with touch display and camera, as well as 3D Printed parts that fix both the camera and the mirror.

During the fabrication, various components have been leveraged. They include paper tube (e.g. a shuttering tube used for pouring concrete), screws and wood.

To cope with cost issues, no lenses have been integrated into the telescope. “The light is focused in one spot, where it stops on the mirror. The body is made of a boarding tube, to which plywood parts are added. With that two simple changes (among other aspects), they could reduce the cost of tool performance”, we can read on Sygnis website, distributor of 3D Printing technologies that ensured the 3D Printing of the telescope parts.

Lenses have been replaced by a built-in camera that convey real-time images. Furthermore, the adjustable size of the object facilitates its use by different users and all images can be shared on any other device (computer, tablet, projector…).

In total, it required 156 hours to 3D Print 17 parts of the telescope on FlashForge Guider II printers using Orbi-Tech PLA material.

Aleksy and Jakub give life to a modern telescope. They achieved the goal of building a low-cost telescope. Today, they are promoting their project in Polish universities, schools and science institutes.
