Just in time to help parents and LEGO fans celebrate the festive season, the LEGO Group announces two new mass-produced festive sets  – one of them being made with additive manufacturing.

This is a premiere for the brand and a major step for consumer goods brands looking to scale production with AM.

 What are these sets?

These sets include the LEGO Icons Holiday Express Train and the LEGO Family Christmas Tree Decoration.

The LEGO Icons Holiday Express Train is a 956-piece set made up of four key car elements. They include a steam locomotive with a bobbing smokestack, and a bell-ringing polar bear. A platform with a bench and a lamppost adds extra charm, alongside miniature toy builds including a first-ever 3D-printed LEGO piece.

In a LinkedIn post, Ronen Hadar, Senior Director, Additive Design & Manufacturing at LEGO, shares that the element is a functional train combining several LEGO® connectors and an internal functionality, only possible with AM. They used an EOS 3D printer equipped with Fine Detail Resolution (FDR) technology. FDR is a powder-based polymer 3D printing process that relies on an ultra-fine CO laser, enabling the production of highly precise parts with exceptionally fine details.

The LEGO Family Christmas Tree Decoration is a 3171-piece set that invites families and builders aged 9+ to create a spectacular Christmas tree home decor piece, filled with imaginative details.

Functional features include working knobs that bring the base train and kitchen clock to life, and a modular design that easily separates into sections for convenient post-holiday storage.

Both sets will be available for all on October 4th – the LEGO Icons Holiday Express Train will cost 119.99 EUR/ 109.99 GBP/ 129.99 USD, and the LEGO Family Christmas Tree Decoration will cost 299.99 EUR/ 269.99 GBP/ 329.99 USD.

In 2022, LEGO introduced its first official 3D-printed piece: a LEGO duck, given as a gift to guests at a LEGO House adult fan event. With today’s launch, the company signaled its ambition to be a key player in bringing additive manufacturing into the mass production of consumer goods.
