Panerai is acknowledged in the luxury watch world for its classical yet outstanding pieces. The brand draws our attention today with one of its latest pieces: the Luminor Marina DMLS – 44 MM.
The name of this masterpiece will raise the attention of any AM enthusiast as it reveals one of the technologies that has been leveraged for its production: DMLS aka Direct Metal Laser Sintering. In what experts in the field describe as an “austere aesthetic”, the new watch highlights a monochrome gray colorway.
If you are familiar with DMLS capabilities, you know this process has the ability to highlight the good sides of Titanium while delivering lightweight that was required for the wrist and boasts. “A high-powered optic laser accomplishes the sintering of the titanium powder, creating a solid shape that grows 30 microns at a time and has a hollow cavity within it”, our media colleagues from watch time note.
Another material that makes this production unique is Carbotech. Ideal for the dark gray, tapering bezel, the material results from compressing thin sheets of carbon fibers at a controlled temperature under high pressure together with the polymer PEEK. The new composite material obtained delivers strength and durability. Most importantly, according to a review from watch time, “the sheets of carbon fibers, which are very long to ensure aesthetic uniformity, are superimposed and pressed together in such a way that the fibers of each layer are set at a different angle to the ones above and below it. The resulting material is lighter and more corrosion-resistant than even titanium and ceramic, and just as hypoallergenic”.
Another advantage we will keep in mind, is that the classical cushion-shaped Luminor case in titanium DLS provides both an eye-catching wrist presence and a high degree of wrist comfort.
Available for the price of 15.000 €, Panerai adds another “talkative” watch that only connoisseurs will recognize.
