Goodyear and its Oxygene, a 3D printed Tire that integrates its own electricity and internet connection

Goodyear recently introduced its latest concept tire. Called Oxygene, it integrates a unique structure that features living moss growing within the sidewall. This open structure and the tire’s smart tread design absorb and circulate moisture and water from the road surface, allowing photosynthesis to occur and therefore releasing oxygen into the air.

With more than two-thirds of the world population expected to live in cities by 2050, the demands on transport networks in urban environments will increase substantially,” said Chris Delaney, President of Goodyear Europe, Middle East and Africa. “Smarter, greener infrastructure and transport will be crucial in addressing the most pressing challenges of urban mobility and development.

Oxygene presents a great number of performance solutions: clean the air we breathe, generate its own electricity, communicate at the speed of light using a LiFi, that enables the tire to connect to the Internet of Things. The tire has also been manufactured while taking into account the environment. Indeed, Oxygene has been 3D-printed with rubber powder from recycled tires. Thanks to its lightweight and shock-absorbing structure, the tire offers a long, puncture-free solution that can extend its life and minimize service issues, delivering therefore worry-free mobility.

We did not receive further information about the 3D printing process.

Last, it should be noticed Oxygene was made on the principles of the circular economy. Its makers took into account the reduction of material waste, energy loss as well as emissions. The concept tire can definitely be convenient for smart cities or cityscapes.
