Adidas leaves its mark in 3D printing with Futurecraft 4D

After Under Armour Futurist, Under Armor 3D printed sneakers, it is the turn of Adidas to announce a new collection of shoes: Futurecraft 4D, which is 3D printed like the former sneakers.

Adidas new collection of shoes is the result of collaboration between the German sportswear giant and the 3D printer manufacturer “Carbon“, it is announced as one of the three flagship products of the brand.

By using the production technique of digital carbon light synthesis, Adidas and Carbon aim at producing in large scale more than 100,000 pairs of shoes by the end of 2018.

“With Digital Light Synthesis, we are getting beyond the bounds of the past, unleashing a new era in design and manufacturing,” said Eric Liedtke, board member of Adidas Global Brands.

For Adidas, too many thoughts and people contributed to achieve Futurecraft 4D. For instance, “17 years of data execution” led to the design of the mid-sole. However, 50 different network structures were tried and tested before the best one was chosen. Carbon approach finally aims at reducing the time of current production cycles of the mid-sole from 90 minutes to 20 minutes.

These shoes are also the “official start” of a more traditional form of 3D printing.

Last but not least, the three-stripes brand announces that a first batch of 300 pairs of Futurecraft 4D will be available this month, and 5000 others a little bit later within the year.
