Since the launch of the Futurecraft 4D in 2017, which featured a 3D-printed lattice midsole made with Carbon’s resin and printing process, adidas has been revealing each year a limited collection of 3D printed sneakers.
This year is no exception as the footwear brand has just dropped the latest CLIMACOOL LACED 3D printed sneakers.
As you may guess, CLIMACOOL LACED is produced through high-resolution Digital Light Synthesis (DLS) 3D printing, a process that takes roughly 24 hours per pair. Built layer by layer, the design integrates ventilation zones and size-specific cushioning directly into the structure. Extensive foot-form testing informs the geometry, while the monolithic build eliminates edges and joins. The result is a seamless lattice construction that is 15% lighter than the 2025 models.
For the wearer, the seamless structure removes rubbing points and pressure areas, delivering smooth and stable support. Targeted ventilation improves airflow where it is most needed, enhancing breathability throughout the shoe. The lightweight lattice midsole provides responsive cushioning tailored to each size. A new laced construction further broadens the fit range, accommodating a wider variety of foot shapes.
Speaking about the new shoe, WNBA player Kahleah Copper said: “For me, I love a simple yet put together look – and comfort must be front of mind. This new sneaker keeps it minimal and I just love the way it is the perfect foundation for any outfit. What’s even better is that they’re truly designed to breathe, with ventilation from all angles they give my feet so much added air when I walk – something I need more than ever after game-day!”
What it tells about the use of AM in the consumer segment
After almost a decade of collaboration with Carbon, the CLIMACOOL LACED is another confirmation of how additive manufacturing in consumer products is slowly moving from concept storytelling to repeatable product releases. adidas continues to refine the same AM platform to produce 3D printed footwear with integrated functions such as ventilation and cushioning in a single structure.
Compared with the perspective outlined in our state of AM business review, the key point is that consumer AM still advances through controlled iterations rather than true mass production. Brands release limited or staged drops, using AM primarily to unlock design freedoms (lattices, seamless structures) and accelerate product development.
This means the vision of AM-driven consumer manufacturing exists, but the business reality evolves around platform maturity first, before industrial volume.
Priced at €160 / $160 / £140, available in UK sizes 4-14 unisex, the new CLIMACOOL LACED is now available for purchase in stores and online.
