Additive Drives GmbH, an AM-driven applications company advocating for the use of the technology for electric motors when it’s necessary, has signed an agreement with Daikin Chemicals to develop new high-performance materials that could enhance the manufacturing process of electric drives.

Daikin is a Japanese company with a European subsidiary known for the manufacturing of fluorochemical products possessing unique properties. In the AM industry, the company is especially known for the development of the NEOFLON PFA material for powder bed fusion bonding. The material that can withstand heat and chemical would be ideal for several applications including semiconductor manufacturing.

In this multi-year collaboration both companies expand, the teams will focus on materials with excellent dielectric properties. According to Additive Drives GmbH, thinner layer thicknesses and partial discharge-free insulation are already possible and enable the development of new motors with high efficiency and long service life.

With a long-term temperature behavior and strong chemical resistance, first tests reveal that the materials can improve insulation properties of the conductors in the stator, as well as efficiency of the machine compared to equivalent motors.

With a key focus on high-performance insulation methods and innovative designs, Additive Drives and Daikin aim to develop a new generation of electric motors in the long run.

Axel Helm, CEO and co-founder of Additive Drives, stated, “Additive Drives is pursuing the goal to make electrification simpler, better and more sustainable. The joint development is a great step towards taking electric drives to a new level all over the world.”
