We have seen gloves designed for impact protection applications, gloves designed to improve athletes’ defensive skills in Baseball and today, 3D-printed boxing gloves? Additive Manufacturing is all the rage in sports equipment manufacturing and not surprisingly, most of these applications including these boxing gloves are so far, enabled by Carbon DLS™.

Those boxing gloves – which by the way makes boxing the 17th discipline out of 200 to leverage AM – are the latest collection of sports equipment manufacturer Hayabusa.

Named T3D Boxing Gloves, the new product line required a complex matrix of resin lattice instead of the usual layered foams at the manufacturing level. The gloves are made up of a mesh network of geometric cells coded to absorb and channel energy upon impact. This enables to keep the wearer’s hands comfortable with targeted support. This 3D lattice contains thousands of force-damping struts proven to outperform and outlast traditional foam construction.

Zonal cushioning protects and performs, all while preserving a comfortable pocket with a perfectly ‘broken-in’ feel. Combined with a patented dual-strap closure system and splinted wrist support, T3D ushers in a new era of boxing, Hayabusa states.

In case you’re not familiar with it, Digital Light Synthesis (DLS), the 3D printing technology at the heart of the manufacturing process, is a resin-based 3D printing process that uses digital light projection, oxygen-permeable optics, and engineering-grade materials to produce polymeric parts. The technology enables the development of a wide range of products beyond the sports industry.

“We are beyond excited to share our T3D Boxing Gloves with the world,” said Hayabusa CEO Ken Clement. “This will fundamentally change the industry’s perception of hand protection and comfort. Hayabusa’s patent-pending design took years of research, development, and testing to perfect, and we’re ready to define the next era of performance.”

T3D Boxing Gloves come in 10, 12, 14, 16, and 18oz sizes, four colourways, and will be available exclusively through Hayabusa from 24 April 2023.

AM in the sports industry

Ever since we have started analysing the adoption of AM across the sports industry, we found out that about 200 sports are recognized sports with national and international federations. However, AM technologies have already played a key role for a couple of them. While at the beginning, most of these applications were only completed for prototyping purpose, most of the applications unveiled since 2019 opened the doors to end-use products manufactured with AM.

Read our complete dossier in the 2021 May/June issue of 3D ADEPT Mag. The “applications” segment (PP 45-50) discusses sport applications made possible using AM technologies and the challenges that this industry still has to overcome.
