When 3D printing integrates the Internet of Things

Over time, companies are increasingly exploiting the combination of 3D printing and the Internet of Things (IoT) in the industry. According to professionals, IoT would monitor, analyze and improve the quality of products manufactured by connecting analysis tools to 3D printers.

MindSphere World e.V., is an association that that promotes the open, cloud-based IoT operating system MindSphere. Developed by Siemens, the system connects plants, systems, and machines.

The aim of MindSphere is to extend its ecosystem; therefore, the association welcomes, members who could bring added value to the association. The goal is to enable companies to exploit data from different sources for in-depth analysis and production management, regardless of geographic location.

EOS joins the platform by offering EOSCONNECT

EOS joins the association alongside Siemens, Festo and Kuka.

With EOSCONNECT, the specialist in industrial 3D printing offers “a software solution that serves as a gateway and, in combination with MindSphere, makes it possible to integrate EOS 3D printing systems in the Internet of Things (IoT).” In order to facilitate manufacturing capabilities, users will be able to connect machine networks around the world.

Combining 3D printing with IOT could have two main advantages: a total control of production data into the companies’ CAQ systems (Computer Aided Quality) for a secure and reliable traceability; as well as transparency with visualization and readout of real-time production KPIs.

For Tobias Abeln, Chief Technical Officer (CTO) at EOS, “the next step is to meaningfully integrate industrial 3D printing in both existing as well as future manufacturing environments and at the same time continually optimize part and data flows in serial production. In other words, it’s all about the digital connectivity of conventional and additive technologies.”
