StandardFlow: AI for additive manufacturing qualification
3D ADEPT

Chicago-area startup StandardFlow launched on October 27th an AI-powered platform that checks engineering documentation against technical standards, flags compliance gaps and generates qualification roadmaps. Initially focused on additive manufacturing (AM), the company is led by former AM journalist Michael Molitch-Hou.

In additive manufacturing, a part that prints well is not yet a part that can fly, sail or go into a patient. Between the two is a large amount of documentation: material certificates, build reports and inspection records, each of which must be mapped to technical standards, customer specifications and regulatory requirements. Today, much of this work is done manually by senior engineers. StandardFlow wants to automate it.

What the platform does

StandardFlow describes its product as a standards compliance automation platform for regulated manufacturing, starting with AM in aerospace, defense, maritime and medical applications.

It combines automated consistency checks with contextual AI to flag missing documentation, conflicting specifications, outdated revisions and other qualification risks. Each finding comes with source citations, confidence indicators and recommended corrective actions. Engineers keep control of final review and approval.

In a demonstration, the platform reviewed synthetic documentation for a fictional naval support bracket against five U.S. military standards. It found conflicting material specifications, inconsistent engineering revisions and inspection equipment used 37 days after its calibration had expired. The 146-page report tied each finding to specific requirements.

“Industrial AM cannot scale on manual evidence-to-standard mapping,” said Michael Molitch-Hou, co-founder and CEO. “We are building the missing qualification layer that sits between engineering evidence and standards authority.”

Molitch-Hou spent more than a decade reporting on AM as a journalist and editor, then worked at ASTM International’s Additive Manufacturing Center of Excellence before launching StandardFlow. “Over those years, I’ve watched this industry make enormous progress in machines, materials, software, and applications,” he wrote on LinkedIn. “I’ve also seen the same challenge slow adoption again and again: proving that a part, process, or document actually satisfies the requirements.”

StandardFlow is a spin-out of South Korean venture studio WeeklyVentures. Co-founder Sangmin Lee will support the company as an advisor, alongside Uli Langer, whose AM career includes leadership roles at AM Ventures and AM Turbines.

The bottleneck is a familiar one.

As we wrote ahead of our Additive Talks episode on civil and defense certification, “the constraint lives in the documentation. And that documentation is the qualification.”

Smaller suppliers feel this most. “Large corporations often have entire departments dedicated to understanding the latest standards and ensuring compliance. Smaller companies typically don’t have those resources, even though they face the same requirements,” Langer said.

Initiatives such as the Common Additive Manufacturing Qualification Template focused on simplifying and standardizing qualification requirements, while StandardFlow focuses on organizing and managing the data and records needed to demonstrate compliance.

That said, I am noting that the demonstration used synthetic data and a fictional project, so performance on real, messy supplier files is still to be proven. The platform already includes publicly available standards, but many ASTM, ISO, and SAE standards require licenses.

That is why I believe the company’s discussions with standards organizations remain important. In highly regulated industries, users must also be able to trace every result back to its source, so the platform emphasizes source-linked evidence and human review.
