Q5D secures $2.5M to drive R&D of Robotic 5-Axis Wiring And Electronics 3D Printing Technology

UK-based robotics firm Q5D Technology has raised $2.5 million in seed funding to finance the development of a new multifunctional wiring and electronics 3D printer.

Backed by Chrysalix Venture CapitalSOSV and the UK Innovation & Science Seed Fund LP , the additional capital will help Q5D refine the technologies to automatically manufacture wiring harnesses. The resulting harness can be lighter, easier to maintain and include the CAE benefits of optimised structural design. The harness will be integrated into existing surfaces or built around structures which can be assembled by robots.

This is a time of great change—the rapid electrification of our transport systems and the increasing functionality of everything from washing machines to mobile phones means that wiring is becoming more complex and labour intensive. We are really pleased to have the chance to work with all our new investors, they are bringing a wealth of commercial and governance experience that will keep us focused and grow the company in the right way”, said Stephen Bennington, Co-Founder of Q5D Technologies.

Q5D has developed a process who is said to automate wire harness production for the first time, using robotic additive manufacturing. The company explains that, until now, the wiring in most products has been made and installed by hand. This process can be a great addition to the wiring industry as it can enhance process quality, remove human error, increase production speed and simplify supply chains. Products benefit from lower weight with improved reliability and safety. The company’s solutions can be applied by manufacturers prioritizing automation and advanced manufacturing. Targeted industries include automotive, aerospace, and consumer white goods and electronics.
