Italy-based ecosystem of companies, scientific institutions and labs Kilometro Rosso has recently inaugurated its new lab dedicated to additive manufacturing technologies. Named LiSATECH which stands for Living Space for Additive Technologies, the lab will provide additive manufacturing companies with space for specialised training courses and R&D activities, as well as various services.

Created in collaboration with EOS, users will benefit from the capabilities of the manufacturer’s M290 EOS – a DMLS (Direct Metal Laser Sintering)-based metal 3D printer.

Companies looking for innovative solutions will have access to a laboratory and training courses covering how to introduce Additive Manufacturing in their business, learn design techniques, or experiment with 3D printing for professional applications. The centre will also offer consulting services for the design and optimization of parts from an Additive Manufacturing perspective, use of DMLS technology for the production of aluminum and titanium components in prototyping phase, infrared scanning to ensure quality control, as well as post-processing specific heat and surface treatments of the components.

The launch of the lab is part of the IRCRAM 4.0 project, of which Kilometro Rosso is a partner. It is funded by the Lombardy Region through the “Call HUB Research and Innovation” programme. IRCRAM 4.0 is a 30-month project which uses Additive Manufacturing (AM) to create a new approach to mechanical design and the creation of industrial components that cannot be achieved with traditional processing techniques.

In line with today’s challenges in the manufacturing sector, where efficient and sustainable production is increasingly important, the solutions proposed by IRCRAM will improve safety by making it possible to delegate the most dangerous tasks to robots and automated systems that are networked and remotely programmable.
